NotesGREY DOMINO 2 by Terry Trowell, published by Atlas Publications in June 1951 (estimated). Grey Domino was Trowell’s first comic book character, and he went on to create other new characters or take over existing characters where their originators were no longer able to continue. He started illustrating text books after his military service in WWII before moving on to comics. After comics, he set up an advertising company, but also returned to his original educational work, including teaching children to draw via puppets on TV.

This crams a lot of story into 24 pages. I find the "Grey Domino" name curious -- he doesn't wear a domino mask, he wears a gray hood.

I haven't seen any explanation for the "domino" part of Grey Domino. I wonder if there's something in the first issue? The mask varies over time, the loose-fitting hood becoming a close-fitting full face mask, and eventually a grey mask that leaves the nose and mouth exposed. Possibly it isn't a reference to the mask. Dominoes are also wooden tiles marked with a range of dots used in a game - but the dominoes themselves are used in displays where one domino falling forward knocks down the next and so forth. They 'fall like dominoes', which is used as a metaphor for one action having a larger consequences. Is the Grey Domino taking action the first in a chain of actions (or am I stretching the metaphor)?

The first issue makes no mention of why the "Grey Domino" name is used/chosen. Hugh Standish just puts on his hood and goes off to fight crime.
