NotesBy Anon. (Jack Lewis) As described by the Editor, the novella here, "The Case of the Sexton Blake Bust," was a "sample of UJ excellence." But it was also a yarn of "pure detective work; others [UJ issues] contain those of a more adventurous twist or of strong human dramatic appeal." In replies to reader correspondents (page 26) the Editor also responded to a reader's report that some grown-ups thought of his paper as "blood-curdling trash." Some 40 years after this UJ issue appeared, story-paper historian Bill Lofts in July 1967 described the Sexton Blake bust as "one of the most treasured and sought-after of collectors' items." In Lofts' circle, "of all the busts that were made, only about a round dozen are known to exist today." The mould and casts were manufactured by a Clerkenwell Road, London, firm, Regali & Son, from an original sculpted by top illustrator Eric Parker. Also on page 26, the results of a readers' poll were mentioned which confirmed Parker's lead as the most popular Blake artist.

The lead story ties in to the magazine's effort to sell Sexton Blake busts; the detective must figure out why someone is smashing the works of his sculptor friend, including a bust of himself. Of extra interest is the center section profile of Rasputin, a "mock" rather than mad monk, and a German agent to boot!
